Srinagar, March 3: Earphones, headphones and earbuds are becoming a cause of concern for its users as these devices are fast becoming harmful for its users, especially young and kids who have become addicted.

Doctors have warned excessive use of these gadgets as these can lead to hearing problems in the near future.

In a statement issued by Doctors Association of Kashmir (DAK), to commemorate the world hearing day, have warned excessive use and have advised users to not use these gadgets for longer time.

“Overuse of earphones at higher volumes over prolonged period of time can result in hearing loss. The younger generation is particularly vulnerable because they are glued to their personal listening devices like earphones, headphones and earbuds,” said DAK President Dr Nisar ul Hassan.

He said that people, especially younger ones, are using smartphones by connecting them with earphones and other such gadgets, for hours together and choose volume as high as 105 decibels. “The safe sound levels are around 85 decibels for adults and 75 decibels for children and people must adhere to it,” he added.

The DAK President said that more people are coming with hearing issues due to the overuse of earphones and headphones. “Today’s earphone users are going to be tomorrow’s hearing aid users,” he said.

March 3 is observed as world hearing day to raise awareness on ways of preventing deafness and promoting aural care through safe listening.

According to a study published in the Journal BMJ Global Health, one billion young people are potentially at risk of hearing loss due to their excessive use of headphones and earbuds.
