Shakeeb Shabir, a BA second year student killed in Anantnag on Thursday, supported his education and contributed toward the income of his poor family, by selling cloth at a roadside stall in Shopian town.

In the morning, Shabir, 21, travelled to Anantnag to purchase merchandise for the stall, but was hit by a bullet in the chest when militants attacked a CRPF patrol at Laizbal locality of Anantnag town.

He was shifted to district hospital Anantnag, where doctors referred him to Srinagar. But he succumbed on way at Bijbehara, about 10km from Anantnag.

“Being the eldest among his three siblings he toiled hard to support not only his own education but that of the other siblings too,” said Tariq Ahmad, his neighbor at Kharpora.

“He loved his mother. She would call him several times a day and also ask him when he will be home. She called him today also and Shakir told her he will reach by five. His body was brought home at five,” Tariq said.

A police spokesman said in a statement that the militants fired at security forces at Lazibal crossing at about 2:20pm, but the “fire missed the target and hit a civilian travelling in a taxi”.
