Jammu, May 8: A major tragedy was averted today when 13 people were rescued after a raft capsized in the river Chenab in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir.

The raft had hit a pillar of a bridge due to which all the 13 people fell into the river but they were wearing life jackets which saved them from drowning.

A rescue operation was immediately launched by the rafting operators and all 13 persons were rescued safely, said an official.

There were two rafts carrying 24 people who had gone for rafting after performing obeisance at Shiv Khori.

A survivor said that after falling into the river they all held each other till rescuers came and took them out of the river.
