Srinagar, January 26: On the 76th Republic Day, Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party celebrated the day with patriotic spirit and festive jubilation, with its President Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari, a pioneer in politics of realism told the 100-day-old Omar Abdullah government to live up to its promise of getting detainees released.
Altaf Bukhari after unfurling the national tricolor at the party headquarters at Church Lane in Srinagar. He was flanked by party colleagues from all over.
On the occasion unlike other politicians who have started asking Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on promises of restoration of Article 370, 200 free units of power, enhanced ration, Altaf Bukhari struck a realistic note. saying that it was too short a time to pin down the government on everything it pledged at the time of elections , but the least it could do is to work for the release of Kashmiri youth and elders who have been languishing in jails for the past so many years . “This is the least of expectations from the government.”
Showing mirror to all other parties, including National Conference, which had attempted to discredit him and his party by calling them “proxy” and other manufactured sobriquets, Altaf Bukhari said that by following the core agenda of Apni Party founded on March 8, 2020, the party was able to save land for the natives. That enabled Chief Minister to proclaim that “our identity lies in our land.”
Bukhari said that the natives and other parties should acknowledge the contribution of the Apni Party, and he assured that his party would get the statehood because it is in the priority list of the party.
Earlier, Altaf Bukhari, flanked by his senior party colleagues, unfurled the national flag with great pride as the leaders and workers joined together in singing the national anthem.
After the flag unfurling ceremony, Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari, while speaking with reporters, said, “This is one of the most significant days, which marks the adoption of the country’s constitution—the most vital document that guarantees every citizen of the country all the fundamental rights, ranging from the freedom of speech to the right to live with dignity. Our Constitution is a beacon of democratic principles. Therefore, this day is festive and is being celebrated by everyone across the country.”
Replying to a question about the performance of the government, Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari said that it is too early to judge the performance of the present government. However, he expressed his wish that this government at least take steps toward the release of detainees.
He said, “Forget whether they will bring back Article 370 or restore statehood. Leave aside their promises of providing 200 units of free electricity, an enhanced quota of ration, regularization of daily wagers, and so on. At the very least, I hope they fulfill their promise of securing the release of our jailed youth.”
Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari said that Apni Party, on its inception day on March 8, 2020, had spelled out its agenda, which it has been pursuing since then.
He said, “Apni Party had promised to strive for the protection of land and jobs for the residents of J&K. We compelled the central government to issue a notification ensuring that the people of J&K would have exclusive rights to land and jobs here. Similarly, we will continue our efforts for the restoration of statehood.”
