Srinagar, October 12:

Apni Party district president Srinagar and former legislator Noor Mohammad Sheikh on Monday urged the J&K government to ensure the proper treatment of patients in government run hospitals across the city who are otherwise being neglected under the pretext of COVID-19 pandemic.

In a statement issued here, the Apni Party leader said the government run hospitals can no longer afford to focus exclusively on COVID-19 patients as the same is jeopardizing the health of those suffering from other fatal diseases.

“When the government doctors are attending private nursing homes without bothering for the spread of COVID pandemic, how are they denying the same treatment to patients at their respective places of postings in government sector,” Sheikh asked.

He said that the government must realize that though the COVID-19 containment is critical but healthcare services for other patients can no longer be ignored. “Amid this frustrating situation, denying treatment to OPD and non-emergency patients like in JLNM hospital is affecting thousands of patients who solely depend on this government healthcare facility,” he said, adding that doctors at JLNM are reportedly not attending to the patients under the garb of COVID pandemic.

He urged the health and medical education departments to ensure that these patients don’t bear the brunt of the crisis. “Patients with scheduled surgical procedures and follow-up visits are undergoing an unimaginable crisis. The state in which Cancer patients are forced to live without hospitalisation will prove fatal for many. Similarly patients suffering from last stage renal disease and who are dependent on haemodialysis are suffering enormously,” he said.

He demanded that the government should also facilitate routine check-up of psychiatry patients, particularly those suffering from depression in all the hospitals wherever these healthcare services are available.
