Udhampur (J&K), December 17:

Traditionally, for last many generations the migratory population from the hinterland of South of Pir Panjal Ranges, consisting primarily of Gujjars and Bakarwals (Popularly known as Deras) have been moving to the higher reaches of Pir Panjal Ranges alongwith their livestock. Many of these Deras cross Pir Panjal and move towards Kashmir Valley as well. The same population move back to lower reaches to their permanent settlements for the winters. They often face problems related to their own health as well as of the animals staying with them. In the present COVID scenario, they face problems of having inadequate masks, soaps, sanitizers and other hygiene and sanitation related items. They also face problems related to clothing with frequent weather & temperature changes taking place.

The focus of Indian Army has been to develop contact and connect with the Awam. In continuation to its outreach to Awam, Indian Army at Samote organised a Medical and Veterinary Camp named Humsafar-e-Pir Panjal, mainly for the migratory population of Gujjars and Bakarwals who have moved back from the higher reaches of Pir Panjal. The event was aimed at increasing interaction with migratory population and focussed on the medical assistance to women. The Indian Army has also engaged with the NGO Goonj from Delhi and Pritam charitable trust from Jammu for distribution of wheelchairs, hearing aids and crutches to the needy populace. During this event COVID Kits, clothing and stationary items were distributed to all the locals from all age groups. Veterinary Support was provided in conjunction with Veterinary Doctor from Budhal. Approximately 1420 persons and 585 animals benefitted from the camp. The event showcased Indian Army’s commitment towards welfare and well being of Awam.
