New Delhi, July 22:

India’s tally of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus exceeded 12 lakh on Wednesday with several states reporting the highest single-day spikes in fresh cases. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Kerala accounted for over 17,000 new cases detected from across the country.

As per the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s COVID bulletin at 9 AM on July 22, the number of confirmed cases in India stood at 11,92,915. This figure was inclusive of 4,11,133 active cases and a total of 7,53,050 recoveries along with 28,732 casualties.

Maharashtra, with the highest number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in India, reported another 10,576 new cases on Wednesday followed by Tamil Nadu with 5849 and Kerala with 1038 new cases. Andhra Pradesh also reported a massive spike with 6045 fresh cases of infection.

Once the MoHFW’s tally of confirmed cases is added to new cases reported by the Health Departments of various state governments, India’s tally stands beyond the 12-lakh mark.

At present, India is the third worst-affected country in the world with respect to the novel coronavirus pandemic trailing behind the US and Brazil. John Hopkins University’s COVID dashboard puts the total number of confirmed cases of infection in the world to 1,49,82,950. As per its data, Covid-19 has claimed 6,17,415 lives across the globe.

India’s tally of confirmed cases surpassed 12 lakh at a time when multiple vaccines for Covid-19 are showing promising results.

The official number of total coronavirus cases, however, remains at 11.92 lakh since the Ministry of Health’s COVID Dashboard is updated at 9 each morning.
