Former Us envoy for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad has cautioned Pakistan of greater drift as the country was witnessing ugly spectacle of Zaman Park area of Lahore, becoming a battlefield, the scenes of which were replicated in other cities across Pakistan.
In a series of tweets when police and rangers clashed with supporters of PTI chief and former premier Imran Khan on Tuesday evening and for hours thereafter that , the former envoy who has been at the center of the US- Taliban negotiations and also knows everything that Pakistan did or didn’t do during the course , set that Pakistan was facing grave crisis.
In his first tweet , Zalmay Khalilzad listed three crisis that Pakistan was faced with. He wrote : “ Pakistan faces a triple crisis: political, economic, and security. Despite great potential, it is underperforming and falling far behind its archrival, India. It is time for serious soul-searching, bold thinking, and strategizing.” His tweet came when Lahore and other cities in Pakistan from Peshawar to Karachi were engulfed in riots.
He said : “The sequential cannibalizing of its leaders through jailing, execution, assassination, etc. is the wrong path. Arresting Imran Khan will only deepen the crisis. I urge 2 steps: 1. Set a date for national elections in early June to avert a meltdown. And use this time for the “main political parties to confront what has gone wrong and propose a specific plan to rescue and put the country on a path to stability, security, and prosperity. Whichever party wins the election will have a mandate from the people on what must be done.
This advice by Khalilzad has irked Pakistan Foreign office , and it has told him that he should mind his own business. What must have irked Pakistan more is the fact that the former US envoy to Afghanistan praised India vis-à-vis Pakistan
.
