Jammu, December 15

The Jammu and Kashmir government is to  lift the house  arrest restrictions of top separatist leaders Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq  in the next few days, according to reliable sources  here.

Geelani has been under house arrest  since early this year  and he was not allowed to move out of his Hyderpora residence even during   Friday prayers . The sources  said this decision, which may be announced any time , is directly related to the separatists’ opening up to the ideas of relenting on the rigidness of their agitation , as also the growing sense of  normalcy among the people.

This would be a sort of reciprocation by the government to the much relaxed calendar of the separatists and  their virtual  calling off the agitation of general strikes and street protests  by this month-end. The agitation that started  after the killing of Hizb-ul-Mujahadeen  Commander  Burhan Wani on July 8  had caused a huge loss to the  Valley .

As Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has herself admitted that there has been “ use of excessive force” in the maintenance  of law and order   in the five  months, the release of the separatist leaders and thereafter the stone throwers  is part of the renewed “ healing touch” announced  by her at a police passing out parade  in Lethpora, Pulwama , in south Kashmir on Wednesday.
