New Delhi, October 20:

India became the second country after the United States to cross the 7.5 million Covid-19 case mark as the country recorded 55,722 infections between Sunday and Monday to take its total caseload to 7,550,273. Also, in this time, the country recorded 579 deaths which, the Union health ministry pointed out, was the first time in nearly three months the country had less than 600 deaths in a 24-hour span.

Also on Monday, schools in a number of states, including Punjab and Uttar Pradesh, reopened for senior classes, albeit on voluntary basis. The day also witnessed resumption of Mumbai Metro services for the first time since March. Globally, the number of Covid-19 cases went past the 40 million mark, according to worldometers, with the United States, India and Brazil, in that order, being the three worst-affected countries by a distance.

India records less than 50,000 new cases of Covid-19 in last 24 hours as 46,790 infections take tally closer to 7.6 million mark. The tally stands at 7,597,063, including 115,197 deaths.
