Sumbal, March 19: The Shadipora irrigation canal in Sumbal area of Bandipora district is in shambles but the authorities have turned a blind eye towards it.

The canal passes through Inderkoot area of Sumbal and provides water for irrigation to hundreds of households.

One of the historic canals of North Kashmir’s Sumbal town in Bandipora district, it is dying a silent death as it has been completely neglected by concerned authorities. The canal has been turned into a dumbing garbage site as nearby households are dumping solid waste management into it and irrigation and flood control department as well as district administration. has turned a blind eye towards it. In our childhood at the same place kids used to bath and swim there.
The Nallah was considered to be lifeline of the areas through which it was passing and is now marred by extensive pollution and has become a garbage dumping site Said’ 70 year old Gh Mohammad Dar, Local Resident. The said irrigation canal at Inderkoot has turned into a dumping site, reflecting the non seriousness of the authorities to restore the major source of irrigation in Sub division Sumbal.

The move has left the residents of the area enraged who have accused the authorities of its non serious approach towards the grave issue.

They said’ the locals have made the canal a dumping site as whole waste and stagnant water gets accumulated in the canal giving a tough time to the community.

“Unfortunately there is no intervention from concerned authorities. Heaps of polythene, plastic paper and other medical wastes are being dumped inside the canal,” said Gh Hassan, another local.

Locals claimed that they informed concerned authorities several times however no action was taken on ground.

“The heaps of garbage and the stagnant water pose a threat of communicable disease,”
He said’ that some locals have been dumping their waste products in this canal and it has been turned into a dumping site.
The residents urged the higher ups to look into the matter so that they can heave a sigh of relief.said a local.
When contacted Mechanical division Irrigation and Flood Control Sumbal, AEE Asif Ali, on telephone for his comments over the issue he said’. we will issue the notice and try to redress the issue at earlier.
The official however urged the people not to throw waste material in the canal saying that it will have hazardous results.
