New Delhi, March 16 ( JKNT) : All the opposition parties of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday submitted a memorandum to the Election Commission of India demanding immediate assembly elections to the Union Territory as the people were suffering in the absence of an elected government for the past nearly five years.
A delegation led by National Conference president Farooq Abdullah told the Election Commission of India that it was the constitutional obligation of the ECI to hold the polls in Jammu and Kashmir, where there is no elected government in since June 2018. The memorandum that Farooq Abdullah and his colleagues from other parties submitted to the ECI, contained signatures of support of various national parties.
After submitting memorandum to the ECI, the delegation leader Farooq Abdullah gave details about the need for the elections in Jammu and Kashmir – ( a) the people are suffering because of the arbitrary decisions of the government of Lieutenat Governor, which has no political mandate, ( b) elections is our democratic right ,( c) it is the constitutional duty of the ECI to hold elections.
He said that once the elections are held , “ we will launch our fight for the statehood. The elections and the statehood is interconnected. Have you ever heard that the state has been split and made UT. This misery was inflicted on the people of J&K.”
