The Indian army chief Gen. M M Narvane on Thursday said that the decades of mistrust between India and Pakistan cannot evaporate overnight but assured that the Indian side will observe the 100-day-old ceasefire on LoC, but the real onus of holding it lies with Pakistan.
Gen. Naravane said that the ceasefire on the Line of Control that divides Jammu and Kashmir between India and Pakistan was a result of the understanding reached between two sides in February. “ The ceasefire is holding, but Pakistan has not given up on other activities of maintaining terror infrastructure , terrorists and other mischiefs to support terrorism. Therefore , the onus of holding the ceasefire lies purely on Pakistan.
He said that the trust between India and Pakistan would be built only on the behaviour of Pakistan . It will take time to come by.
It may be recalled that India and Pakistan had reached an agreement in which they renewed their faith in the November 26, 2003 , ceasefire on the LoC and all other border areas.
In the last 100 days, ceasefire has borne fruits. There has been no incident of firing on the LoC. But , it is also a fact that Pakistan has not given up on its attempts to stoke terrorism in Kashmir, though that has been tamed to a large extent because of the efforts of the security forces, particularly army.
Gen. Naravane said that after getting his feedback from the field commanders at the hinterland as also the LoC, he believed that the situation has improved a lot. “ it meets all parameters of normalcy”, as he observed that there have not been many terrorist-initiated incidents . The people, too, have recognised virtues of peace.
He said that the army is ready for Amarnath Yatra, though the final decision lies with the Government. The registration of the yatra has been suspended owing to the second wave of the Covid-19, but with the decline in the cases , it is hoped that the yatra may eb conducted this year.
