Jammu, January 31: AIIMS Vijaypur, Jammu, has achieved a remarkable milestone in cancer treatment and surgical excellence with the inauguration of its state-of-the-art Radiotherapy Oncology Department and Main Operation Theatre Complex by the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu & Kashmir.

Lt Governor was also the Chief Guest at the AIIMS Jammu-IAPCON 2025, 32nd International Conference of the Indian Association of Palliative Care. Lt Governor officially declared AIIMS Jammu as a ‘Pain-Free AIIMS’, reinforcing its commitment to patient-centered and compassionate healthcare. ‘Pain Free’ Policy document of AIIMS Jammu was released by the Lt Governor. AIIMS Jammu is setting a new benchmarks in pain management and palliative care, ensuring that every patient receives dignified, pain-free, and holistic medical care. Pain Free policy at AIIMS Jammu will include AI-driven pain management solutions for cancer and chronic illness patients, specialized palliative care units to improve patient comfort and quality of life and advanced pain relief therapies integrated into routine medical care.

Under the visionary leadership of Dr. Shakti Kumar Gupta, Executive Director & CEO, AIIMS Jammu and Dr. Shabab Lalit Angurana, Professor & Head, Radiotherapy Oncology, the Institute has commenced Radiation Therapy Services with the inclusion of Linear Accelerator (LINAC), offering Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT), Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) and Stereotactic Radiation Therapy (SRT). The Department is also equipped with CT Scan Simulator with 4D technology, Brachytherapy Unit and a 10-bed Chemotherapy Day-Care Center with an isolation room for immunocompromised patients.

The establishment of this facility is expected to reduce the need for patients to travel long distances for radiation therapy, ensuring timely diagnosis and treatment within the region. The service will cater to a increasing number of cancer patients, offering advanced radiotherapy techniques, personalized treatment plans and multidisciplinary care. The Hospital-Based Cancer Registry, under ICMR’s National Cancer Data Project has also been commenced which will further aid in shaping effective cancer care operations and strategies.

The launch of the Radiation Oncology Services marks a significant milestone in AIIMS Jammu’s commitment to advancing cancer care in the region. Speaking about the inauguration, Dr. Shakti Kumar Gupta stated “The introduction of Radiation Oncology Services at AIIMS Jammu is a transformative step in enhancing cancer treatment accessibility and improving patient outcomes. This initiative aligns with our mission to deliver comprehensive, high-quality healthcare to the people of Jammu & Kashmir and adjoining areas.”

The Lt Governor also inaugurated the OT Complex, featuring 8 advanced operation theatres at AIIMS Jammu. These includes 4 Integrated OTs with live surgical broadcasting for real-time medical training, 1 Hybrid OT with rotatory MRI and CT scan technology for complex procedures like transplants and cochlear implants. The OT facility has High-definition audio-visual systems for precision and enhanced learning, modular design ensuring flexibility and efficiency in surgical procedures.
