It was in the afternoon of 12th September that the news broke that three officers have been seriously injured in an encounter in South Kashmir. The news was received with disbelief as never before were 03 officers seriously injured in an incident in 34 years of fighting terrorism.

It was reported that based on a specific input about the presence of terrorists in Gadole, Kokernag, an operation was launched along with Army on 12 September 2023. Next day on specific input about a hideout on the slope of a cliff in Gadole another operation was launched. DySP Himayun Bhat volunteered to go alongwith raid cum assault party which also had CO 19 RR Col Manpreet Singh and Maj Ashish Dhonchak of 19 RR.

They trekked the arduous and difficult terrain diligently and in order to maintain surprise, the operation party of JKP, Army which included DySP Himayun Muzzammil Bhat, CO 19 RR Col. Manpreet Singh, and Major Ashish Dhonchak reached very close to the location of the hideout. While nearing the hideout the operation party came under heavy fire in which our officers and a soldier were critically injured. Despite hail of bullets and injuries; our officers demonstrated exceptional bravery & courage and led the operation from the front. Despite the treacherous terrain with thick forest cover and heavy gunfire by terrorists our wounded officers were evacuated for medical treatment. But unfortunately DySP Himayun Muzzammil and the Army officers succumbed to their injuries. This prolonged encounter, marked by valour and sacrifice of our braveheart martyr DySP Himayun Bhat ultimately led to the elimination of two terrorists, including LeT commander Uzair Khan. The sacrifice of these officers will be remembered for ever and their bravery will be etched in the annals of our nation’s fight against terrorism.

Lt. Governor of J&K, Shri Manoj Sinha, led a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at District Police Lines Srinagar, honouring the martyred officer Himayun Muzzammil. The grief-stricken family received condolences from various quarters, as the nation mourned the loss of a dedicated officer.

Born on October 21, 1989, Himayun Muzzammil Bhat, was the eldest son of retired Inspector General of Police, Shri Ghulam Hassan Bhat. He completed his primary education from Burn Hall School Srinagar, and pursued engineering from SSM college of Engineering.

Inspired by his father’s glorious police career and fuelled by the passion for police work, Himayun embarked on his professional journey as he joined State Police Services and was appointed Deputy Superintendent of Police in 2018. His commitment and hard work were evident even during the Basic Induction Course at the Sher-e-Kashmir Police Academy in Udhampur.

After completing his probationary period in the challenging district of Srinagar, Himayun got his first posting in the northern district of Baramulla. Later, he was transferred to Police Component in Srinagar, where he not only discharged his normal duties but was also entrusted the additional responsibility of Chief Investigating Officer (CIO). As an Investigating officer Himayun’s professionalism display was a testimony to his analytical acumen and dedication to justice.

In June 2023, Himayun took on a new challenge, when he was posted in South Kashmir as Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Kokernag.

In his short but illustrious career, DySP Himayun Muzzammil Bhat earned accolades for his raw courage and dedication to duty and is remembered by his colleagues as a gentle and down-to-earth personality. Survived by his parents, younger brother, wife, and an infant baby boy, his legacy as a selfless and dedicated officer will forever endure.
