Mehbooba Mufti who has repeatedly been threatening to quit if she failed to deliver on her late father Mufti Mohammad Sayeed’s vision is finding herself at a dead-end and may finally show her back to the chair of Chief Minister.
Compressed by the volatile political situation and non-cooperation of the Centre combined with the occasional high-pitched fissures with the alliance partner BJP, Mehbooba Mufti finds that her record as Chief Minister is dismal. Continuing in the chair without delivering to her people and core constituency of Kashmiri Muslims , it would be better to step down as a martyr to cause of Kashmir rather than to allow herself to be consumed fully.
At a stage where she finds that her writ and push for getting things done is being stonewalled by Delhi and Delhi’s proxies , the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir, and raising of secessionist overtones by National Conference leadership, Mehbooba is trying to take a call on her and PDP’s political future . This call, as she has suggested to her confidants and to a section of media, would be to step down .
Mehbooba, the sources said, has discovered that the whole of her party’s agenda of healing touch, self-rule and revocation of “ black laws” like Armed Forces Special Powers Act ( AFSPA) and Disturbed Areas Act. She also is finding it difficult to get the army move out of the critical places needed for public utilities . Her changing discourse has not helped her much.
It is reliably learnt that she would take a last chance during the budget session of the state legislature commencing here from January 2 . That would determine her next step to stay put are step down to retrieve her political constituency whatever is left of it.
