Hails seizure of passports, Aadhaar cards and licenses of drug peddlers as “historic”

Srinagar, May 7: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Altaf Thakur on Thursday launched a sharp attack on drug peddlers in Jammu and Kashmir, terming them “narco terrorists” and asserting that the administration’s intensified crackdown under Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha would dismantle the entire drug network in the Union Territory.
Addressing reporters, Thakur strongly backed the ongoing anti-drug campaign led by the LG administration and said the government was treating the menace with the seriousness it deserved.
“Drug peddlers are no less than narco terrorists. They are destroying our younger generation, ruining families and pushing society towards collapse. The way terrorism was crushed in Jammu and Kashmir, the drug mafia too will be uprooted completely,” he said.
Thakur said the administration’s recent actions, including seizure of passports, driving licences and Aadhaar cards of those involved in drug trafficking, were “historic and bold measures” aimed at breaking the financial and social backbone of the narcotics trade.
“These are unprecedented steps. The message is clear—those involved in poisoning society will not be allowed to live normally or enjoy any privileges. The LG administration has shown zero tolerance against drugs,” he said.
The BJP leader said the anti-drug drive had gained massive public support as people across Jammu and Kashmir were increasingly worried over the growing addiction among youth.
He praised the role of police and security agencies in intensifying action against drug suppliers, smugglers and networks operating in various districts of the Valley and Jammu region.
Thakur also welcomed the recent fatwa issued by Grand Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam regarding drug money, saying it had sent a strong moral and religious message to society.
“The Grand Mufti has taken a courageous stand by declaring that money earned through drug trade cannot be used for charity, mosques or any religious purpose. This is a powerful message and will help isolate drug peddlers socially as well,” he said.
He said religious scholars, civil society members, parents and teachers must join hands with the administration to save the younger generation from the menace of narcotics.
“Drug addiction is not just a law-and-order issue; it is a social emergency. Every section of society has to rise against it,” he added.
Taking a dig at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Thakur criticised the party for allegedly opposing the demolition of properties linked to drug peddlers.
“Instead of supporting strict action against drug mafias, PDP leaders are trying to shield them by questioning demolition drives. This exposes their double standards and sends a wrong message to society,” he alleged.
He said there should be no sympathy for those involved in drug trafficking, claiming that such elements were “enemies of society” who deserved strict punishment under law.
“The houses and assets built through drug money should not be protected. The administration is acting within the framework of law and people are supporting these actions,” Thakur said.
The BJP spokesperson reiterated that the party fully supported the anti-drug campaign launched by the LG administration and asserted that the crackdown would continue until the narcotics network was completely dismantled.
“The future of Jammu and Kashmir’s youth is at stake. This war against drugs must be fought collectively and decisively,” he added.
