Panchayat elections to more than 12,000 positions of Panchs and Sarpanches across Jammu and Kashmir will be held soon as a notification to this effect will be issued between October 10 and 12 , according to official sources connected with the conduct of the polls.

The polls are scheduled to be held in early November.

These elections were deferred in February this year owing to the security situation on the eve of the US president Donald Trump’s visit to India for “ Namaste Trump” event . These polls were to complete the process of the panchayat polls in Jammu and Kashmir as in October-November 2018 , it could not be completed due to the boycott of these elections by the major regional parties , National Conference and People’s Democratic Party.

These parties had sought a clear cut assurance from the government of India not to tamper with the special status of Jammu and Kashmir . Many positions were not contested and remained vacant.

The sources said that the elections would be held to fill all the vacant seats , most of which are in the Kashmir Valley.
