New Delhi, January 07:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday said he is distressed to see news about riots and violence at the US Capitol.

He also said democratic process cannot be allowed to be subverted through unlawful protests, adding that orderly and peaceful transfer of power must continue.

“Distressed to see news about rioting and violence in Washington DC. Orderly and peaceful transfer of power must continue. The democratic process cannot be allowed to be subverted through unlawful protests,” Modi tweeted.

Hundreds of pro-Trump demonstrators stormed the US Capitol Wednesday when lawmakers were counting Electoral College votes to certify President-elect Joe Biden and Vice-President elect Kamala Harris’ election victory.

Police evacuated lawmakers and struggled for about four hours after the invasion to clear the Capitol of Trump supporters. One woman died after being shot during the mayhem.
