Poonch, September 14:

At least 12 passengers were killed when a mini-bus met with an accident in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday.

Official sources said that the mini-bus (JK12 1419) carrying 25-30 passengers from Mandi to Saujian skidded off the road at Bareri Nallah and plunged into a deep gorge on Wednesday morning.

They said that 12 bodies have been recovered so for and the death toll is likely to go up.

“There are passengers with critical injuries who have been shifted to hospital for treatment.” 

The slain included 2 boys and 3 women.

A major rescue operation has been launched by soldiers from 40 Rashtriya Rilfes, Jammu Kashmir Police and locals.

The Lt Gov of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha expressing shock over the accident tweeted, “Saddened by loss of lives due to a road accident in Sawjian, Poonch. Condolences to bereaved families. May the injured recover soon. Rs. 5 lakh would be given to the next of kin of deceased. Directed Police and Civil authorities to provide best possible treatment to the injured.”
