Jammu, April 30: Jammu and Kashmir police has arrested a cleric from Bathindi area of Jammu district in connection with the Poonch militant attack, in which five soldiers were killed and one soldier was injured.

Police has arrested the cleric on the allegations of being in touch with handlers in Pakistan and coordinating with the militants in Poonch.

Sources said that Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police detained Molvi Manzoor, a cleric who hailed from Poonch and was working in Bathindi’s Madrassa, after Nasir Ahmed revealed his name during the interrogation. Nasir Ahmed was detained and since his arrest police had got new direction into Poonch attack, as said by DGP J&K Dilbag Singh, a couple of days back.

The April 20 attack had happened in Bhimber Gali area of Poonch district near the LoC and police has claimed that six to seven militants might have been involved in the attack. DGP had said that around 10 to 12 militants are operating in twin district of Raouri and Poonch.

Sources said that Nasir was in contact with Manzoor and the later was delivering messages received from across the border to the former, who was giving shelter to militants. “Molvi Manzoor was using the advanced communication technology to coordinate with handlers in Pakistan and later on send the same to militants through Nasir,” said source.

The source further said that the cleric has confessed to the crime and his questioning is going on to ascertain further details.
