August 7, Jammu: Ministry of Home Affairs has declared RR Swain’s appointment as the Director General of Police (DGP) for Jammu and Kashmir, immediate effect, Swain, who has been filling in as an auxiliary capacity, will formally take over the position. He will serve in this capacity until September 30, 2024, or until new directives are given.

IPS officer R.R. Swain on October 31 took over as 17th Director General of Police (DGP) of Jammu and Kashmir at a function held at the police headquarters in Srinagar succeeding Dilbag Singh who served as police chief of J&K for over five years.

Since June 2020, Mr. Swain, an IPS officer from the 1991 batch, has also held the positions of Special DG CID and Intelligence Chief for Jammu and Kashmir. With a lengthy tenure of 15 years on central deputation, Swain held the position of chief police officer of both the winter and summer capitals, Jammu and Srinagar. In addition, he served as Senior Superintendent of Police in Leh , Poonch, and Ramban districts.

In 2020, the officer rejoined the state cadre and was promoted to the position of intelligence chief in June. He took over from veteran IPS officer B Srinivas, who was recently assigned as DGP Puducherry.
