Srinagar , May 16 The State Investigation Agency , headed by Special DGP ( CID) R R Swain , has achieved a rare success in tracing and arresting the two of the remaining accused and proclaimed offenders wanted in the May 21, 1990 , assassination of Moulvi Mohammad Farooq . The accused have been handed over to Central Bureau of Investigation or CBI, that had taken over investigation of the case from J&K police .
Mirwaiz Moulvi Farooq , chief priest of Kashmir and chairman of Awami Action Committee ( AAZ) was assassinated in his Nigeen residence , Srinagar , in mid-morning of May 21, 1990 .His assassination inflicted severe wounds on the Kashmir psyche and added new dimension of eliminating influential political and religious leaders.
Swain , during his press conference on Tuesday , said that of the five Hizb-ul-Mujahadeen militants involved in the conspiracy to assassinate the Moulvi Mohammad Farooq , two, including the mastermind Abdullah Bangroo , were killed in encounters, one , Ayub Dar arrested , and two others Zahoor Bhat and Javaid Bhat were absconding .” They were on the run , and during their absence from Srinagar, they had travelled to Pakistan and Nepal,” but the SIA ‘s intelligence network closed on them and both were arrested.
“ As the CBI is investigating the case , the two proclaimed offenders have been handed over to the central investigating agency.”
Swain said that, it is now clear the long arm of law has caught them and they will be brought to justice
The fact of the case is that it was a very difficult and complicated case to crack . The Mirwaiz was killed in his study, which had plenty of books on Islam and religious philosophy. It also had a life-size portrait of the leader. He had returned to his home after visiting house of one of his followers Soon after two young boys entered his residence , and enquired about the Mirwaiz . The message was sent to Moulvi Mohammad Farooq , and he called them into his study . He was shot. The gun shots were heard, and the two assassins ran out of the house .
After the case was handed over to CBI, the investigators found it difficult to investigate as no one was coming forward to record the eyewitness account , not even the gardener who had seen the assassins entering going out of the house . It was after years of investigation that CBI could list all the conspirators and killers . But it still was not able to catch Zahoor Bhat and Javed Bhat , the assassins .
SIA accomplished the job , when it arrested both of them, and handed them over to CBI.
