Jammu, January 2: The Sikh community took out a colourful Nagar Kirtan procession from Chand Nagar Gurdwara ahead of Guru Gobind Singh’s Birthday.

The District Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (DGPC) and the State Gurdwara Parbandhak Board (SGPB) have decided to celebrate the 351st Parkash Utsav (Birth Anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh on January 5 (Friday) in accordance with the Nanak Shahi calendar.

More than 10,000 devotees took part in the procession. Palki Sahib was leading the procession in which Guru Granth Sahebji (the revered Holy Scripture of the Sikhs) was carried on a beautifully decorated vehicle along with Nishaan Sahebans (Religious Flags).

The procession was marked by rendering of Shabad Kirtans (Holy Hymns) by the different Jathas of men, women and children. Besides that Panj Pyaras (five beloved ones) in their traditional attire were cynosure of the attraction all along the procession.

“Every year, we make sure to take part in the procession as it is an opportunity for us to create awareness among people on our first guru and his significant contribution” said Happy Singh, a professional who was part of the procession.

“We pray for those who are affected by the Hudhud cyclone and for those are worked hard to build Vizag” said joghindar singh, a worker.

While the procession was crossing different parts of the city the roads were cleared and cleaned by Sewadars.

In the later that in the evening, the booming, rhythmic drumming and colourful outfits of the Dhol drummer, commanded the locals attention.

Langar Stalls were also kept at a few points to provide refreshments to those who took part in the ‘Nagar Kirtan’.
