Several vendors selling smuggled imported cigarettes without displaying the graphic pictorial warnings in sheer violation of the COPTA Act were raided in Srinagar.
The raids were conducted by the field metrology department and the vendors were found seling smuggled cigarettes without MRP and other mandatory declarations.


These raids were conducted at the vendors who were selling the imported cigarettes without the mandatory pictorial warning about the health hazards smoking entails. The selling of smuggled cigarettes in India is a crime.


These smuggled cigarette sellers do not pay any tax in India They also do not contain 85per cent of the graphic as per the Indian law -COPTA Act. They do not have name, , address, manufacturer / importer, manufacturing date, MSP, etc. as per the Indian law.

The raids under the COPTA Act – the Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products ( Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce ,Production , Supply and Distribution Act , as many places were raided by the authorities in Srinagar , sending a clear message that there will be zero tolerance to such illicit sale.
The raids were conducted as the vendors were selling smuggled imported cigarettes.
