Dogra Educational Trust and IIJSA Pay Homage to the Bravehearts of 1947

Jammu, October 25, 2024: In a solemn and inspiring event held at the Dogra Educational Complex, the Dogra Group of Colleges in collaboration with the International Institute of J&K Studies and Analyses (IIJSA), paid tribute to the brave war heroes of Jammu & Kashmir. The event witnessed participation from esteemed dignitaries, students, and faculty, all gathered to pay tribute to the valor and sacrifice of those who fought during the historic battles of 1947.
The event commenced with the arrival of the Chief Guest, Maj Gen Goverdhan Singh Jamwal, AVSM, Former MLC, and the only surviving General of the J&K State Forces, who was warmly received by Thakur Gulchain Singh Charak, Chairman of Dogra Educational Trust, and the event convener.
The ceremonial lighting of the lamp by all dignitaries set the tone for the program, followed by a soulful group song performed by the talented students of Dogra College of Education (DCE). Dr. Shefali Sharma delivered the welcome address, expressing gratitude for the presence of all guests and emphasizing the importance of remembering the heroism of the soldiers who defended the state.
The event’s highlight was the detailed recounting of pivotal battles from the First Indo-Pak War of 1947. Brigadier Dr. Vijay Sagar Dheman introduced the legendary Brigadier Rajinder Singh, whose sacrifice was instrumental in defending the state. Gp Capt U S Sambyal, grandson of Lt Col Narayan Singh, CO of the 4 JAK Regiment, vividly narrated the Battle of Muzaffarabad, while Col Rajinder Singh, SM, son of Capt (Later Col) Prithi Singh, recounted the Battle of Garhi (Northern Flank of the Jhelum River). Sh. Narsingh Dev Jamwal, the sole survivor of Sub Duni Chand’s platoon, shared his harrowing experience of the Southern Flank of Garhi. Finally, Maj Gen Goverdhan Singh Jamwal, who witnessed the events, delivered a poignant account of the Battle of Mahura, Rampur Buniyar, and the martyrdom of Brigadier Rajinder Singh on October 27, 1947. His first-hand testimony added emotional weight, inspiring the audience with the enduring legacy of valor.
In his Presidential Address, Thakur Gulchain Singh Charak, Chairman of Dogra Educational Trust, praised the heroes’ unparalleled contributions and called upon the younger generation to uphold their legacy of patriotism and selflessness.
As a token of appreciation, mementoes were presented to the dignitaries by Thakur Gulchain Singh Charak.
The event concluded with a heartfelt Vote of Thanks delivered by Ms. Shuchi Sharma, marking the end of a meaningful and reflective program. She thanked all dignitaries, guests, management and Faculty of Dogra Group of Colleges and participants for making the tribute event a success. The tribute ceremony not only honored the memory of the brave soldiers but also served as a reminder of the sacrifices made to protect the integrity and unity of Jammu & Kashmir.
