Srinagar, August 05:

Traffic was on Thursday resumed on Srinagar-Jammu national highway after remaining suspended for weekly maintenance.

We resumed two-way Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) traffic on the highway this morning, a traffic police official said.

However, he said, Heavy Motor Vehicle (HMV) and security force convoy will ply from Jammu to Srinagar only. No HMV will be allowed from the opposite direction.

Following frequent closure of the highway due to landslides and shooting stones during winter month, the Union Territory (UT) administration decided to suspend traffic on every Wednesday to allow the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to undertake repair and maintenance work. The highway is the only all weather road connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country.

He said LMV traffic was allowed to ply on Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Poonch and Rajouri in Jammu region. Jammu-bound Heavy Motor Vehicle (HMVs) will ply from Heerpora Shopian, he added.

The national highway, the only road linking Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh with Kashmir, was also through for one way traffic. Today vehicles will ply from Srinagar to Ladakh.
