Srinagar, Feb. 15: A strong Western Disturbance is going to affect Jammu and Kashmir from the night/morning of 18th February onwards. Under its influence, moderate to heavy rain and snow is expected in Jammu and Kashmir.

Initially, there can be rain only in plains, which can transform into snow later on 18th or 19th February. There is an uncertainty whether it will continuously snow in plains as temperatures may again rise on 19th afternoon. However, for higher reaches, it is going to dump heavy to very heavy snowfall till 20th February. Over 5 feet of snow accumulations can also happen in a few areas. The total amount of snow accumulation at Sadhna Top may reach cross 10 – 12 feet (including previous 5 feet snow). So the pass may get closed for a long time now. A similar situation is expected for Razdan Pass and Sinthan Pass.

For plains, if snow occurs and accumulates, it will be slightly denser and has the potential to cause damage. It won’t be dry and fluffy type snow this time. Applicable for middle reaches as well.

Landslides and shooting stones can also occur over Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. So it is advisable to postpone your planned journey between 18th & 21st February.
