Jammu, September 28:
The Centre has taken a giant step in according near-citizen status of West Pakistan refugees who had been struggling to get their identity in Jammu and Kashmir where they were despised and treated as outsiders having no place to stay in the State .
Not only the Centre has given them the identity cards to the members of nearly 6,000 families but also compensation of Rs. 5.50 lakh to each of these families to slow down their woes that had become their destiny since they came from across the border, what is now Pakistan , to settle to escape prosecution and killings by the marauders.
Home Minister Rajnath Singh deserves the credit for understanding their problems , for he has done for these hapless sols which had remained undone ever since 1947 the year when they were uprooted from their homes and became refugees.
The credit should also go to Governor Satya Pal Malik who executed the Centre’s decision without even blink of eye for this was a humanitarian issue of which there was no parallel in the history .
The scheme was approved by Ministry of Home Affairs. Rajnath Singh said
MHA has approved a scheme of Rs 5.5 Lakh financial assistance to nearly 5,764 West Pakistan Refugees settled in J&K. Amounts due to the eligible beneficiaries will be transferred in their bank accounts.
