Jammu,March 10: A two days workshop on the theme: ‘G20 and Women: Unlocking the Potential’, begans at University of Jammu, organized by the Office of Programme Coordinator NSS, in collaboration with Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu. In the inaugural session Prof. Naresh Padha, Dean Academic Affairs was the Chief Guest, and Prof. Jasbir Singh, Head Department of Philosophy was the Guest of Honour. The session began with the welcome address of Prof. Vishav Raksha Director Centre for Women’s Studies. She deliberated upon the importance of International Women’s Day and emphasized that this is a great opportunity for the students to come and engage themselves in such type of workshops to get deep insights on the issues related to gender and gender concerns.

Prof. Naresh Padha, in his address by stressed upon unlocking the potential of women and not restricting them to gain more knowledge. He also gave details about the G20 and said that it will provide a platform to showcase its efforts towards the social upliftment of the women.Prof. Jasbir Singh, in his address appreciated the efforts of the Office of Programme Coordinator NSS and Center for Women’s Studies for initiating such types of workshops. While interacting with the students he mentioned that the visibility of women in the society is limited and suggested various remedies to bring equality, focusing more on equity. Dr. Hema Gandotra, Programme Coordinator, NSS presented a formal vote of thanks and the session was conducted and coordinated by Dr. Saranjit Kaur and Ms.Kunzang Angmo both Faculty members Centre for Women’s Studies.

In second session Prof. Vishav Raksha, Director Centre for Women’s Studies was the key resource person who spoke on the topic: “Understanding Unlocking the Potential of the Women”. She stressed upon the importance of acknowledging the gender differences, by treating each other with respect and facilitating both with equal opportunities. In the third session, Dr.Ritu Ahal, a renowned Dentist and Cyclist and Dr. Deepali Mahajan, NSS Programme Officer, GGM Science College, Jammu were the resource persons. Dr.Hema Gandotra introduced both the resource persons. The session began with the screening of a short film on Women and Gender Stereotypes prevalent in the society.
Dr. Ritu Ahal in her presentation shared her personal and professional experience as Dentist and Cyclist and shared that gender disparities and biasness also exists in the medical profession as well. Dr. Deepali Mahajan, in her presentation talked about women empowerment and emphasized on deconstructing the stereotypical thinking for which girls have to become mentally attractive. Further she suggested that we should be well determined to attain whatever we want, and through better versions we can make our life better and worth.
The workshop was attended by more than 100 students including NSS Volunteers from various Degree Colleges, B.Ed Colleges and from various Departments of University of Jammu.
The others who attended the program were Prof.Savita Nayyar, Dr.Suresh Rao, Dr. Shallu Sehgal, Dr.Neelam Chaudhary, and Dr.Amit Sharma and staff members from Centre for Women’s Studies and Office of Programme Coordinator NSS.
