Jammu , March 11 National Conference president Farooq Abdullah who chaired an al-party meet in Jammu on Saturday , said that all the political parties of J&K will approach the Election Commission of India for “ immediate elections “ in the territory as that is the democratic right of the masses that has been denied to them for years together.
In the all-party meet, in which all the parties barring People’s Conference , DPAP of Ghulam Nabi Azad , attended the meeting , resolved that Centre should restore democracy in J&K without any delay .” This is vibrant voice of all the parties representing all the people of Jammu , Kashmir and Ladakh , that the statehood be restored.
“ We are not helpless , we will fight at all levels and raise the demand for the elections as J&K which is integral part of India has been deprived of assembly polls for the past nine years , why this discrimination,” Farooq asked .
The all-party meet also dwelt on the issues of anti-encroachment drive and property tax and over all situation in which the people were compelled to feel that they have no one to listen to them. One LG is no substitute for the elected government,. He said that the government of India must wake up to the situation and respond before it is too late .”
Farooq also said that the all parties delegation will also call on the Election Commission of India and question why Assembly elections were not being held in J&K , as the delay is in violation of the Supreme Court of India ‘s directions that the Assembly polls be held within six months of the dissolution of the Assembly.
It may be recalled that the last elected government in Jammu and Kashmir was that of BJP- PDP coalition which collapsed on June 19, 2018 . The Assembly was kept in suspended animation , and dissolved on November 21, 2018 . Thereafter, parliamentary elections were held in April-May 2019 , but the assembly polls were not announced at all . And after the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019 , the whole context changed with the split of the state into two union territories, and constitution of the delimitation commission . Now the elections and its idea have been placed on back burner .
