Texas, June 28:

At least 40 people have been found dead inside a tractor-trailer in San Antonio, Texas, citing law enforcement official briefed on the matter.

San Antonio’s KSAT television reported 42 people dead inside the truck, in a presumed migrant smuggling attempt in South Texas. According to local media reports, the truck was found next to railroad tracks in a remote area on the city’s southern outskirts.

San Antonio police is yet to make an official statement on the incident.

Meanwhile, Mexican foreign minister Marcelo Ebrard said the Mexican consul was en route to the site where dozens of people were found dead in a truck. Ebrard said in a tweet that the victims’ nationalities were still unknown.

“Tragedy in Texas. Reportedly suffocated in trailer box. Consul en route to the point. Condolences to the victims and their families. We don’t know nationalities yet,” he wrote on Twitter.

The Mexican General Consulate in San Antonio said on Twitter that it would provide aid to any Mexicans involved in the incident, if there were any. It also said Consul General Ruben Minutti was on the way to the scene.
