Ladakh, 27th April 2024 – A highly impactful cleanliness drive was successfully organized today in Kharu Main Market, Leh Ladakh with a primary emphasis on community waste management and the imperative significance of waste management practices in the region.
Supported by HDFC Parivartan and implemented by CII Foundation, this initiative marks a crucial step towards preserving the pristine beauty of Ladakh.

As a part of the initiative a cleanliness drive was organized with the collective efforts of UT Administration of Ladakh, Kharu Market/ merchant association, community members to demonstrate a shared commitment towards clean and green Leh along with focusing on environmental sustainability in the region.

Thinles, Project Coordinator of CII Foundation, delivered a welcoming speech to dignitaries and participants of the community waste management initiative.

The event was honored by the esteemed presence of Sub Divisional Magistrate Shri Sonam Dorjay, highlighting the urgent need for effective waste management practices and their indispensable role in preserving the pristine beauty of the Himalayas.

The event witnessed the participation of prominent dignitaries, including Block Development Officer Kharu Mr.Manzoor Hussain, who delivered insightful speeches on waste management in Ladakh. SDM Shri, Sonam Dorjay commended the dedicated efforts of the CII Foundation members for their unwavering commitment to waste management. He also acknowledged the Market Association and house owners for their diligent adherence to waste continuity measures, ensuring cleanliness in every corner of the market.

One of the key focal points of SDM Sir’s address was the gravity of the 3R-Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle policy in the Himalayan region. He emphasized that this concept holds immense relevance in curbing waste and preserving the ecological balance of this pristine landscape.

In his address, BDO Sir also emphasized waste management practices specific to Ladakh. He stressed the significance of the Swachh Abhiyan campaign and highlighted its impact on the overall wellness and health of the community.

Nawang Thinles, Chairman of CII, delivered an impactful speech, providing CII’s perspectives on waste management in Ladakh. He emphasized the significance of waste management and the crucial role played by the CII Foundation in promoting sustainable practices. Advocating the principles of the three R’s – reduce, reuse, recycle – he encouraged everyone present to integrate these practices into their daily lives.

The event witnessed active participation from various stakeholders, including members of the Merchant Association, Army representatives, and GRIEF representatives.

A remarkable total of 275 people participated in this cleanliness drive. The initiative took place in collaboration with the CII Foundation and the UT Administration of Ladakh, showcasing a united effort towards achieving a cleaner and greener Ladakh. As a gesture of support, the CII Foundation distributed free dustbins to all Market Association members. The President of the Merchant Association received a total of 18 dustbins for the market area, while 2 were given to the local police post in Kharu.
