Jammu, August 19: Former Indian Army Chief General Sundararajan Padmanabhan passed away on Monday morning . He was 83.
Gen. Padmanabhan is known for his straightforward approach had taken several measures, during his tenure as General officer Commanding of Srinagar-based Corps had supervised several operations had broken the backbone of terrorism in Kashmir in 1990s .
His biggest success at that time was to get the Hazratbal shrine vacated of terrorists who had occupied it for almost a month in October-November 1993. He got the shrine vacated without firing even a single bullet fired during the month-long standoff at the shrine holy to Muslims .
His death has been mourned by Chief of Army Staff Gen. Upendra Dwivedi and all other ranks. The army described him as a “ visionary leader and accomplished soldier.”
Gen. Padmanabhan was army chief from October 2000 to December 2002.
