Samba, December 24

Calling it as a blot on democracy, the All Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Conference, AJKPC have asked the State government to review its decision to hold indirect elections for the Sarpanches._

Anil Sharma,  president of  the Panchayat Conference while addressing a gathering of panchs, Sarpanches there in district Samba reiterated

the demand of his organization to roll back the decision of holding indirect elections for the post of Sarpanches.

He said, ‘In a democratic country like India,  it is painful that an elected government is ceasing the rights of the citizens to  popularly elect their own leaders’. He said the motive of any government to hold local body elections should be to empower the people and decentralize the power structure but unfortunately the decision of the J & K government to hold panchayat elections appears to be taken in haste just to get central governments funds.

It is pertinent to mention here that the State govt have amended the J & K Panchayati Raj Act, Wherein the citizens right to elect their sarpanch have been taken away and now the panchs will elect sarpanchs amongst themselves.

In the awareness program organized by the AJKPC about the important provisions of 73rd amendment of Indian Constitution , other panchayat members also shared their views against the decision of the state govt to hold panchayat  elections through State Electoral officer instead of the Separate election commission for holding these elections.

The participating panchayat members unanimously resolved to continue their struggle under the banner of AJKPC and assured the president of the organization that in days to come, more such programs shall be organized in each panchayat to educated masses about the benefit of 73rd amendment of Indian Constitution.
