Jammu, March 11- University of Jammu is hosting a two-day North Zone Cricket Tournament for divyang cricketers on 11th and 12thMarch 2023. The tournament is being organized by Disability Initiatives, Unit of the University, Unnat Bharat Abhiyaan-Jammu University chapter, and Directorate of Sports and Physical education in collaboration with NGO partner Divyang Cricket Team Jammu and Kashmir. Three cricket teams representing the states of Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir are participating in this tournament. The inaugural ceremony of the cricket tournament was held today at the Cricket ground of the University. Prof.Naresh Padha, Dean Academic Affairs, JU was the chief guest and Prof.Jasbir Singh, Convener UBA-JU was the guest of honour on the occasion. Prof.Naresh Padha, Dean Academic Affairs, University of Jammu applauded the efforts of the Disability Initiatives unit for organizing a sports event for the divyang community. He stressed that in keeping with the NEP 2020 renewed emphasis has to be placed upon the non formal educational experiences. He assured that University of Jammu is ready to organize more sports activities for the divyanjan so that their energies are channelized. Prof.Jasbir Singh, Convener, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan JU chapter mentioned that it is a proud moment for the University as its differently abled students belonging to the rural areas are participating in this event. He was of the view that sports unifies India without urban-rural prejudice. He stated that University is offering multiple provisions to ensure that students with disabilities are fully engaged and included in all aspects of campus life. Prof.Sarika Manhas, Coordinator Disability Initiatives, JU shared that this is for the first time that the University of Jammu under the patronship of Vice Chancellor Prof.UmeshRai is organizing a zonal level cricket tournament for the differently abled. She mentioned that this event was conceptualized with an aim of providing opportunity to the divyang students enrolled at the University to experience and participate in a sports event. She further stated that this activity is an endevour to contribute to the wholistic development of the differently abled students. Ms. Sunita Kashyap, Chairman Divyang Cricket team Jammu and Kashmir thanked the University of Jammu for hosting the cricket tournament. She emphasized that the disabled players also have requisite talent and skills but there is dearth of sport infrastructure for them. She expressed gratitude towards Disability Initiatives Unit for organizing this event of significance.

Ms. Sandhya Dhar President JIGER also made significant contribution towards the organization of the cricket tournament. Technical committee of the tournament is headed by Sh. Rajkumar, Cricket Coach of University of Jammu and former Ranji trophy player. Prof.Namrata Sharma, Convener JUICASH,Dr. Suresh N. Rao, Member UBA, Dr.HemaGandotra, Programme Coordinator NSS, Dr.Shallu Sehgal, Department of Economics also graced the inaugural ceremony. Team of student volunteers Vinish Malik, Pooja, Meghna and Insha conducted the proceedings of the inaugural ceremony. Two cricket matches were played today. The first was between Jammu and Kashmir and Uttar Pardesh, where J&K was the winner. The second match was played between Himachal Pardesh and Uttar Pardesh, where U.P was the winner
