Jammu, December 20: Known as the harsh winter season, the 40-days long ‘Chillai Kalan’ is yet to knock on the doors of Kashmir Valley, but the minimum temperature in Jammu and Kashmir rises for last 2-3 days.

A day before the 40-day-long period of ‘Chillai Kalan’ starts, minimum temperatures rose across Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday due to a cloud cover, the expert says.

Chillai Kalan is the period during which snowfall replenishes the perennial water reservoirs that sustain the valley’s water bodies through the summer months.

Light rains occurred in the plains, while the higher reaches received light snowfall, a Met official said.

Not only in Kashmir Valley, the mountainous region of Jammu too witnessing sunny days with rise in day and night temperature.

The minimum temperature was 2.3 in Srinagar city, 0.1 in Pahalgam and minus 5.2 in Gulmarg.

Leh town recorded minus 10.5 as the day’s minimum temperature, a rise of around three degrees.

Jammu city recorded 12.2, Katra 13.3, Batote 8.8, Bannihil 4.6, Bhaderwah 3.4 and Udhampur 11 as the minimum temperatures of the day.
