Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was at his best in contradicting himself in his speech after the ceasefire announced between India and Pakistan on Saturday evening , when he claimed success and at the same time profusely thanked a host of nations , in particular , China .
This is the kind of deception that Pakistan has always displayed when it suffers defeat at the hands of India, in wars and other fields . Sharif could not explain how it was Pakistan’s victory when he thanked from the US President Donald Trump to Chinese President Xi Jinping for bringing about the ceasefire .
It was toward the sun set on Saturday evening when India announced that an understanding has been worked out with Pakistan to stop firing and military action . External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s post on X: “” India and Pakistan have today worked out an understanding on stoppage of firing and military action .” He also underlined , leaving no one in doubt as to what brought about this cessation of hostilities between the two nuclear powered countries , as he added: “India has consistently maintained a firm and uncompromising stance against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. It will continue to do so.”
This tweet of Jaishankar, read with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri’s revelation that it was the call from Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations’ call to his counterpart at 1535 hrs ( May 10, 2025) that resulted in the understanding that all firing and military action on land and in air will stop at 1700 hrs, clearly shows that who was asking for ceasefire and why .
India had retaliated to Pakistan’s escalation with its attempted attacks at Srinagar, Udhampur, Pathankot and other airbases . Pakistan was on its knees . By Saturday morning , it had suffered big damage to its military assets at the airbases , and was left with nothing but a plea to India for dialogue in the interests of peace and stability in the region .In fact , this swan song had started immediately after Operation Sindoor had begun to teach Pakistan a lesson for its role in staging a macabre terror incident in Pahalgam , killing 26, mostly tourists.
The ISPR chief Lt. Gen. Ahmed Sharif Chaudry urged India to start dialogue and not to escalate for the stability and peace in the region . He was making plea directly to India. The military knows where it hurts the most . That statement of ISPR chief ran contrary to the boast of Army Chief. Gen. Asim Munir re-invoked two-nation theory thesis .
Against this backdrop , Pakistan PM thanking the US, China, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, UAE and Qatar is beyond comprehension except that he urged all of these countries to request India not to hit Pakistan hard. He knew where the country stood and what it was losing .
Shehbaz Sharif should have told his nation what guarantees it gave to the leaders of these countries while beseeching for ceasefire . Since, he has not done that, though all the assurances Pakistan gave would be known soon to them, he has resorted to deception at the global level and cheated 240 million people of Pakistan
