Both Houses of the Parliament have passed much awaited Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 with a clear majority in favor of the legislation that will soon become law following its approval by President of India Droupadi Murmu. It is a historic legislation, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed as a watershed moment, because its contents and contours will deliver social justice to the marginalized sections of the Muslim community that is the largest minority in the country.
When social justice is delivered, it enthuses the whole community. This encourages them to be progressive and join the circle of inclusivity with a self-confidence of its own. The law is on their side. Besides it has rid them of the exploiters, because until this day Waqf properties measuring lakhs of acres were serving to benefit few while the large majority of the poor children, elders and women suffered deprivation. The Modi government has turned a corner for them.
The Modi government, which is often accused by opposition of marginalizing Muslims in the country, has delivered to the largest minority community in the country what they had been waiting for ages. Prime Minister has taken several steps ever since he assumed this office in May 2014 to further his vision of “Sab ka saath, sab ka vikas…” (To take every citizen of the country along for the human development of one and all “, has taken this historic step, the fruits of which would be soon available to the Muslim community.
During the debate on the Waqf Amendment Bill, it was discovered that the opposition played its familiar ugly card of scaring the minorities, particularly the Muslims. It appeared and sounded as if the Congress was bent upon spelling dooms day for the Muslim community in the country. There were allegations, some leveled with contrived passion and emotions, ignoring the true essence of the amendment bill.
Home Minister Amit Shah nailed their lie, as he recounted how the opposition, particularly Congress’ fear mongering pitch at the time of the verdict on Ramjanam Bhoomi verdict, passage of the CAA bill and abrogation of Article 370 failed. The people have started making distinction between those who speak truth and those who give wings to lies.
This is a crucial moment in the history of Muslims in the country as for the first time; the poor and marginalized sections can hope to get help from the fair governance of Waqf Properties which were of no use until the passage of this bill that will soon become law after President Droupadi Murmu accords her approval.
In short, it is a new hope for millions of Muslims in the country. This aspect has been highlighted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his first reaction to the passage of the bill by both the houses of the parliament.
PM Modi in his reaction stated: “The passage of the Waqf (Amendment Bill and the Mussalman Waqf (repeal) bill by both Houses of Parliament marks a watershed moment in our collective quest for socio-economic justice, transparency and inclusive growth. This will particularly help those who have long remained on the margins, thus being denied both voice and opportunity.”
These are profound words of hope on one side and on the other these reflect of vast and unwavering commitment to peoples of all communities, and for Muslims in particular through these bills. This is what will give a new and positive direction to nation-building and accord pace to country’s journey to “Viksit Bharat,” in 1947. Muslims will be fellow travelers in this journey as their hopes have brightened.
