Jammu, December 1

In what could be  a  turning point in the  current PDP-BJP coalition  government , Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti  has  stated that her party will follow its own line , no matter what the alliance partner BJP  says or does .

Reviewing the performance  of PDP at a general council  meeting here on Wednesday , Mehbooba Mufti , who also is the party president made it clear that  PDP would stick to its own agenda of peace and conciliation and will not be cowed down by the jingoistic noises made by   BJP .

She made it clear that  party’s main constituency is in the Valley, and the urges and aspirations of the people there , and some parts of Jammu  sit at odds with the ultra nationalistic agenda of BJP , therefore PDP should “ follow its own path laid by late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.”

The serious differences between the two alliance partners, who had joined hands in early 2015  to form the government  citing the mathematical  compulsion of the seats  won by each of the parties in their respective area of influence , were aired  very loudly in the meeting .   Ministers, legislators and other leaders attended it.

Sources said  “ there  were compulsions and  we could not have thrown the state into a state of instability , but if we feel that our goals are not being achieved, then the best course is to stick to our ideology and work hard for it,” sources quoted Mehbooba having told the party leaders . These were clear indications that alliance with BJP was not a permanent affair.

The context was the ongoing unrest in the Valley.

PDP ministers were also chided for lack of 100 per cent devotion to the people and addressing of grievances  of the  party workers.

She also made it clear  that there was no option but to  re-open dialogue with Pakistan . The BJP can have its own viewpoint , but “ we firmly believe that the  state can live in peace  only if there is no  hostility between the two countries.” The party leaders endorsed this unanimously.
