Political parties have started gearing up for the  all-important  Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council  elections as the polls are scheduled to be held in September for which Deputy Commissioner Leh  has been appointed as  the Election Authority .

The Deputy Commissioner has  notified the summary  revision of the electoral rolls for Leh district  for the voters who are eligible for voting in the polls.

The draft rolls will be published on Monday i.e.  August 17, 2020 and final rolls after all other formalities will be published on   September 10,. The elections will be held as per the  final draft roll.

There are 26 seats in the council  open for elections, while rest of the four are nominated . In the last elections  held in 2015 , BJP had secured the majority of seats .

Now BJP and Congress are among the parties in race to secure majority in the council that was first formed in 1995, as a consolation prize to the area for its  demand to have Union territory for the region.

This will be the first election  to the Council  in the UT of Ladakh.

Ladakh comprising two districts of Leh and Kargil , was made a UT on October 31st last year.
