Jammu, March 16:
On the opening day of this mid-March week, Kashmir walked through three high- impact making political developments – PDP undertook party restructure with Mehbooba Mufti announcing the office bearers and political affairs committee , People’s Conference General Secretary Imran Raza Ansari quitting the party post and National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah coming out in support of Delhi Kejriwal whose government’s powers are being transferred to Lieutenant Governor.
Mehbooba Mufti has restructured the party , it is more or less the same list of the office bearers and political affairs committee members but due care has been taken to give more representation to Jammu region . The message is in the timings as well.
It was considered normal that she would be appointing office bearers of the party after her re-election as President of the political party last month , but at this stage when National Conference president Farooq Abdullah has announced his willingness to enter into dialogue with Centre, this restructuring has a meaning more than mere putting party leaders in different positions.
She wants to tell all her friends and foes that she is not the only one in the party and at the same time her choice of the PAC members demonstrates that despite the fact that some of the leaders are in prisons, she stands by them . She has not abandoned them, particularly Naeem Akhtar and Sartaj Madni .
In next few days or weeks, Mehbooba , it seems , is expecting major political developments . She has distributed the responsibilities , and it is in preparation for the political battles ahead.
Imran Raza Ansari, a prominent and influential Shia leader in Kashmir , would not have quit the party position simply because more leaders and workers were joining the party . His insistence that his resignation should be accepted today itself makes the things more curious. Something is brewing up , and what it is would be known in the days to come, most probably re-alignment of the political forces.
Omar who had been tweeting on weather and beauty of snow in Kashmir in the recent months came out in support of Delhi CM whose government is facing power cut. Minister of state for home G K Reddy introduced the National Capital Territory of Delhi ( Amendment) Bill, 2021 that confers more powers to the Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal and curtailing accordingly the powers of Arvind Kejriwal Government that had been at loggerheads with him on the power turf .
Omar‘s support came with a taunt . He tweeted : in spite of AAP’s support for the dismemberment and downgrading of J&K in 2019, we still condemn this assault on the powers of the elected government of Delhi. Delhi deserves to be a full state with all powers exercised by the elected government and not a nominated LG.”
Through this message of support for Kejriwal, Omar conveyed his angst over what happened to J&K in 2019 when its special status was scrapped and the state bifurcated into two Union Territories- Ladakh getting a separate political map and government as a UT . That means that he is now back in the political scene with the theme of getting for J&K what it had until August 4, 2019.
