A major disorder is waiting to happen as the ranks of the militants have swelled across Jammu and Kashmir , and all of them are further emboldened by the fact that nearly 700 others are waiting to cross over to this side of the Line of Control before the snow closes their routes via mountainous passes.
An internal assessment of the Northern Command that guards the LoC and deals with internal security in a vast majority of the state, barring the international boundary which is with the Western Command , is that there are at least 300 armed militants active in Jammu and Kashmir, and about 700 others are close to the launching pads .
“ It can be a very serious situation in the days to come,” according to sources privy to the assessment that has been made over the past six months. The contributing factors have been the unrest in Kashmir which paralysed the normal life during summers but encouraged youth to romanticize guns and bullets.
On the other hand, Pakistan exploited the unrest in the Valley following killing of Hizb-ul-Mujahadeen commander Burhan Wani in an encounter as “martyrdom of the young leader of Kashmir,” to enthuse militant outfits operating from its soil to launch attacks in the state.
That’s what they have done so far. The surgical strikes and the other offensives have proved of no consequence .
The military assessment is that this level of militancy and the motivation can wreak havoc in the state unless pre-emotive measures are put in place. And doing so is not an easy task because there are so many reasons which they cannot explain at the moment.
