At least two passengers were killed and about 30 injured when 15 middle coaches Sealdah Ajmer Express (Train No. 12987) derailed near Kanpur early today morning.

Kanpur police confirmed that “while rescue operation was on, two passengers lost their lives and about 30 others injured.”

 Train no. 12987 Sealdah-Ajmer Express went off the tracks between Rura and Metha railway stations, about 50km from Kanpur, the ministry of railways said on Twitter.

Railway minister Suresh Prabhu tweets: We are working with hospitals and district administration to offer all possible help. We are making alternate arrangements for passengers to continue with their onward journey and are thus taken care of.

As per preliminary reports 15 coaches of the train got derailed. The first 5 & last 3 coaches were intact, Anil Saxena, Indian Railways spokesman said.

The injured have been shifted to district hospital.

The derailment took place when the train was passing through a small bridge over dry canal.

This incident of derailment has happened after a month of Indore Patna Express train accident in which 140 people lost their lives and many were injured. That derailment too took place in the early morning due to fracture of the rails near Kanpur Dehat.

Sources told that in today’s derailment the coaches are not so badly entangles as was in case of Indore Patna accident.
