Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University Fraternity members formulated an Astronomy Club, the first of its kind in the state of Jammu and Kashmir under the guidance of Dr. Sanjeev Jain, Vice Chancellor SMVD University.

The purpose of the club is to bring together Sky walkers, share their passion and organize events and activities related to the field in SMVDU campus. It has been informed that more than 80 members, including faculty, staff and students have joined the club and are actively participating.

Dr. Swarkar Sharma is the faculty coordinator of the club. The club initiated its activity by organizing an event for the SMVDU fraternity to watch appearance of Super Moon that could be seen through out this week.

The club members are sharing their personal telescopes and presently have Orion SkyQuest XT10 Classic Dobsonian Telescope capable to explore deep sky objects like Nebulae, Galaxies, Star clusters etc.; Celestron C90 MAK and a 6/700 Reflector Telescope capable to help visualize Solar system objects like Planets and their Moons.

In addition, members claimed that they have subscription to state of the art “Online Telescopes” located in USA and Europe that can control online over the Internet.
