Jammu November 19: The Department of Geology organized one day workshop on “Role of geology in hydropower projects” for the scholars and students under its newly launched “Meet the Alumni” programme.
Prof Pankaj Srivastava, the Head of the Department said that the J & K state has tremendous potential of the hydropower generation. This potential when exploited fully, will provide an strong impetus to the growth of its economy and development of this potential will require necessary technical expertise and personals he added.
He said that the students hence should be equipped with the latest techniques used in the geotechnical investigation for hydropower projects to present themselves as the trained technical person for the future jobs to be generated in the new projects. The resource person, Dr M A Qazi of Chenab Valley power Projects Ltd who is also an alumni of the department, has given an elaborative presentation about the latest techniques applied in the tunneling, drilling, blasting and other aspects of Hydropower Projects.
He informed the gathering that the optimal exploitation of available hydel resources in the State would not only meet the internal demand but will also supply power to the Northern grid to boost the overall development of the State. While dealing with the very specialized topics Dr Qazi demonstrated the stages of geotechnical investigation in construction of dams and tunnels in a very interactive and interesting way.
In the valedictory session the participants expressed their view about the workshop and thanked the department in providing them such opportunities to interact with the field experts. While thanking the resource person, The Head of Department applauded the role of alumni in the development of the department.
