P V Sindhu created history and continued her golden run in 2016 as she defeated Sun Yu 21-11, 17-21, 21-11 in the final of the Chian Open Badminton tournament to win her first Super Series title.

Sindhu played with a mixture of speed and aggression as she destroyed Sun in the first game which lasted for just 13 minutes.

In the second game, Sun fought hard and ensured that Sindhu did not establish a big lead like she did in the first game. However, the Indian shuttler held her nerve and built pressure.

At 8-7, Sun managed to get a backhand in but her racquet touched the net which changed the course of the game. Sindhu held a four-point advantage but the Chinese shuttler staged a comeback and turned the tables as she led 16-15.

However, a couple of unforced errors from Sindhu consolidated Sun’s position and she won the game 21-17 to set up a thrilling final game.

Both players were tied at 6-6 when Sindhu stepped up and once again raced to a four-point advantage. This time, the Indian did not let go of the lead and consolidated well to win the game 21-11 and the championship.

Heading into this encounter, Sindhu’s head-to-head against Sun was 2-3.

Sindhu has enjoyed decent success in 2016. In the Rio Olympics, she became the first Indian woman shuttler to clinch the silver medal.
