Jammu, July 14 , 2026 : For over a decade, fans have widely believed that Rancho, the unforgettable protagonist of 3 Idiots played by Aamir Khan, was inspired by education reformer and environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk. The speculation grew stronger over the years because of similarities between the character’s outlook on education and Wangchuk’s work.

However, filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani has now firmly put the speculation to rest.

In a recent appearance on Komal Nahta’s podcast, “How Rajkumar Hirani Creates Blockbusters! Game Changers S1E1,” Hirani said that Rancho was not based on Sonam Wangchuk. Instead, he explained that the character was shaped by real experiences from his student life at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) and by people he met during that period.

The Incident That Became Rancho’s Soul

Sharing the story, Hirani recalled meeting a young man whose passion for filmmaking was so intense that he found an extraordinary way to pursue his dream.

According to Hirani, the aspiring filmmaker had failed to secure admission to FTII. At the same time, another student who had earned admission was unable to join because of personal reasons. The young man then assumed his friend’s identity and attended the institute in his place, completing the entire three-year filmmaking course under that name.

His true identity surfaced only after the course had ended.

When the institute informed him that he would not receive a degree because he had studied under a false identity, his response left a lasting impression on Hirani.

“I never came here for a certificate. I came here to learn filmmaking.”

Hirani said that this simple yet powerful statement became the emotional and philosophical foundation of Rancho’s character. It perfectly reflected the film’s central idea—that education should be driven by the desire to learn, not merely by the pursuit of degrees, marks or recognition.

Vidhu Vinod Chopra Had Shared Another Piece of the Puzzle

The filmmakers had earlier revealed another interesting detail about Rancho’s creation.

During the 1st Himalayan Film Festival in Ladakh in 2021, producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra publicly acknowledged one of his former FTII classmates, Phuntsok.

Addressing him during the official PIB broadcast of the event, Chopra congratulated him and went on to reveal that Rancho’s full name in the film—Phunsukh Wangdu—was inspired by his FTII classmate, whom he affectionately called “Phuntsok Ladakhi.”

The revelation established that the character’s name originated from someone personally known to the filmmakers during their FTII days.

A Character Inspired by Many, Not One

Hirani’s latest clarification, combined with Chopra’s earlier remarks, offers a clearer picture of Rancho’s origins.

Although 3 Idiots is officially adapted from Chetan Bhagat’s novel Five Point Someone, Hirani explained that several defining aspects of Rancho’s personality were drawn from real-life experiences and individuals rather than from a single public figure.

The director said the character gradually evolved through memories, observations and encounters that celebrated curiosity, independent thinking and a genuine love for learning.

More than fifteen years after 3 Idiots was released, Rancho continues to inspire audiences around the world. With these fresh insights from its creators, one of Bollywood’s most iconic characters is now better understood not as a portrayal of one individual, but as a fictional personality shaped by multiple real-life inspirations and a timeless belief that true education is about learning, not certificates.
